Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) is a contract used to regulate the transfer of research materials between IU and other organizations. It defines the rights of the supplier and recipient with respect to the transferred material, its derivatives and related information. It prevents the materials supplier from losing control of the material and use of the research, protects a researcher`s existing and potential intellectual property, and ensures that the transfer is not contrary to the federal rules and rights granted in other research project agreements. The Clinical/Corporate Contracts services team handles both incoming MTAs, where the university receives research materials from other institutions, as well as outgoing MTAs for which we share the university`s research materials with other institutions. The University of Pittsburgh requires that an outgoing MTA (or some other form of contract, for example.B. subcontracting) for university materials be sent by our university. Outgoing MTA process. PNs should use the checklist of outgoing biological and chemical material transfer agreements in the university`s research management system ( to obtain authorization to transmit equipment to other facilities or facilities. Fill out the information requested online and send the form electronically to the Environmental Safety and Environmental Safety Office (ETS). The ETS will check for compliance issues. Once approved by the ETS, the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) will work with you to generate an MTA.

The PSO or SEQE may request additional information before sending the outgoing MTA to the external institution for verification and signature. After the MTA is returned signed by the external institution, an approved signatory of the university will sign the MTA and inform the IP that documents can be sent to the external institution. It is important to follow all ETS instructions for shipping materials. The PSO was created and emailed to the external institution for verification and signature. If an external institution provides its incoming MTA model, email the MTA model to OSP for verification and acceptance.
